Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Story

Belmont's Curse takes place in 1499, in a Paris overrun by monsters and fire, twenty-three years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Trevor Belmont walks into the burning city with his daughter Rose, who carries Dracula's curse in her right arm. Dracula is defeated, not gone, and the story follows what his defeat left behind.

Belmont's Curse is set in 1499, in a medieval Paris where the bells are ringing the end of something. Monsters come out of the dark, the city burns, and Trevor Belmont, the man who defeated Dracula, walks into it with his daughter Rose, who carries Dracula's curse in her right arm.

The official setup

Konami's own introduction is short and specific, and it is worth stating in its own terms rather than paraphrasing it into fan lore:

The setting is medieval Paris in 1499. The tolling bells herald the end. Paris is engulfed in flames as monstrous creatures suddenly emerge from the shadows. Trevor Belmont, the hero who defeated Dracula, ventures into the burning streets with his daughter, Rose Belmont. They are armed with the legendary holy whip, the Vampire Killer, and they hunt the beasts bleeding from the looming castle. * Rose is soon swept up in the dark conspiracy that lurks beneath. Whether she saves Paris is the story.

Dracula is described by Konami as an undead king of vampires and master of Dracula's castle, who led an army of monsters against humanity at the end of the fifteenth century and was defeated by Trevor and his companions. His soul, in the series' terms, is not something a defeat removes.

Where it sits in the timeline

Konami describes the game as "set 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse". Castlevania III's story is set in 1476, and 1499 is twenty-three years later, so the two statements agree with each other.

Three games in the series carry "Curse" in their subtitle, and they line up neatly:

GameRelease yearStory yearDistance from this game
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse1989147623 years earlier
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness2005147920 years earlier
Castlevania: Belmont's Curse20261499This game

Two things are easy to get wrong here. The release years are not story years, they are when each game came out, and the 1989 and 2005 dates belong in a release column rather than a timeline column. And the sequence is a set of three titles that share a subtitle, not an official trilogy: the sources describe the title as alluding to the two earlier games, and no one at Konami has named a trilogy around it.

Two details corroborate the twenty-year gap. Isaac, one of the bosses, is described in official character text as having a connection to Trevor from twenty years earlier, which is the Curse of Darkness period. And Rose's story is explicitly a generation on: she is Trevor's daughter, not his contemporary.

📌 Worth knowing. Fandom notes that 1499 is exactly five hundred years before 1999, the year Dracula is destroyed for good in the series' established timeline. It is a nice piece of internal geometry. It comes from a community source rather than a Konami page, so treat it as context rather than confirmation.

The Belmonts, one generation later

The family dynamic is the part of the story Konami has been most specific about, and it is not a happy one.

Sypha Belnades, Rose's mother, fought alongside Trevor twenty-three years earlier. Official character text says she died because of the curse, shortly after Rose was born. That is the curse in the title, and it did not stay with her: Rose's right arm carries it, which is why she is both the protagonist and the thing the story is about.

Trevor is therefore a father entering a burning city with a daughter he cannot fully protect from what she already carries. The confrontation that follows is not only Dracula's, and the boss list shows why: Isaac's grudge against Trevor is twenty years old, which puts personal history in the way of nearly every fight.

Rose Belmondo appears as Trevor Belmondo in Japanese materials, a first for the Japanese side of the franchise. If you see the name Belmondo in a Japanese trailer or storefront, it is the same character.

What the story is not

It is not a remake of Castlevania III, and Konami has never called it one. It is a new game in the same timeline that happens to be set a generation later. It is also not a reboot: the events of the third game and of Curse of Darkness both sit behind this one, and Isaac in particular exists specifically because the earlier games happened.

The series background page covers the forty years of releases the game is part of, and where this one sits among the collections that are still on sale. The characters page covers the four principal characters, their voice actors, and the question about Rose's identity that Konami answered twice, differently.
