Belmont's Curse Demo Problems

The Belmont's Curse demo has a small set of problems that come up over and over in community threads: a black screen on launch, a failure to start on displays above 120 Hz, controllers that the settings menu never detects, and no ultrawide support. Konami has not responded publicly to any of them, so this page records what people tried rather than asserting causes.

The demo has been out since September 30, 2026, and a small number of problems come up again and again in player threads. This page records them, what people tried, and what is still unknown. None of it is official, and none of the workarounds here are endorsed by Konami.

Black screen on launch

By a wide margin the most reported problem: the demo starts and never renders a frame, leaving a black window or a black screen with audio, depending on the report. It is reported across GPU vendors and both desktop and laptop machines, which is one reason the pattern is interesting and the guesses about it are not.

What players have reported trying, with mixed outcomes: launching in windowed mode, switching the display resolution before launching, disabling overlays, verifying the game files, and updating graphics drivers. Nobody has published a confirmed fix, and there is no Konami response to point at.

If this is you, the practical advice is the same as any launch failure: verify the files first, remove overlays, and try windowed. Do not reinstall repeatedly, because the save transfer depends on your demo save surviving until launch.

Displays above 120 Hz

At least one report describes the demo refusing to run on a high refresh rate display, and a related report describes a 480 Hz full screen mode running in slow motion. In that case, dropping to 240 Hz or running windowed restored normal speed.

This one is worth separating from the black screen, because it points at display configuration rather than the install. If you have a high refresh monitor, set the refresh rate and switch to windowed before concluding the demo is broken. The same report set notes that framerates below the cap behaved normally.

Controllers not detected

DualSense, Switch controllers and the Steam Controller have all been reported as missing from the settings menu. The reports share one detail worth noting: it happens even with no other controller connected, which rules out the usual cause of the wrong pad claiming the player slot.

The related reports are less specific: menus that scroll by themselves, including after every controller has been physically disconnected. Nobody has described a reliable fix, and no pattern by controller model has been confirmed.

No ultrawide support

21:9 displays are reported as not supported, with players describing either pillarboxing or a stretched image. There is no official statement on ultrawide either way, so this is one to check before you buy if your display is part of your decision.

Steam Deck

Steam Deck reports in the demo period are mixed. Players describe low performance, a start menu cropped at 16:10, an unusable pause screen and small UI text. Valve has not published a Deck compatibility rating for the game, so there is no third-party verdict to weigh against those reports yet.

There is also a save-related wrinkle for Deck owners specifically: with no cloud save in the demo, moving progress between a desktop and a Deck means moving the files by hand.

Smaller reports

Low volume, reported once by a player who had to raise system volume far above normal. A crash on opening the map, reported once. * Shader compilation stutter, described on high-end cards including an RTX 4080.

Single reports are listed here for completeness and marked as such rather than promoted to patterns. Three or more independent reports is the bar for treating something as a recurring issue on this page.

What to do if the game does not start

In order, and stopping when something works:

  1. Verify the game files through your storefront.
  2. Set the display to windowed mode, and drop the refresh rate below 120 Hz.
  3. Disconnect every controller, then relaunch.
  4. Update your graphics driver, and make sure your operating system meets the published PC requirements, which specify Windows 11.
  5. Check the demo page for the save-transfer conditions before you delete or reinstall anything.

If none of that helps, the honest position is that the problem is unsolved publicly. There is no patch note to wait for yet, and the full game's behaviour on the same hardware will not be known until October 14.

FAQ

Why does the demo show a black screen?

Unknown. It is the most reported demo problem, and Konami has not published a cause. Trying windowed mode, verifying files and removing overlays is what players report doing.

Why will the demo not run on my 144 Hz monitor?

There is a cluster of reports about high refresh rates. Dropping to 240 Hz or switching to windowed mode has restored normal behaviour for some players. Treat it as a display setting to rule out rather than a confirmed cause.

My controller is not detected in the demo. Is that a known bug?

It is a recurring report, not a known bug, because Konami has not acknowledged it. It has been described with DualSense, Switch controllers and the Steam Controller, including with no other controller plugged in.

Does the demo support ultrawide monitors?

Players report that it does not. There is no official statement either way.

Will these problems be in the full game?

Unknown. The reports are all from the demo, and no one has had access to the retail build.
